Herbicidin K is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the group of peptide antibiotics. It is synthesized by a wide range of bacteria, including Bacillus species and Pseudomonas species. Herbicidin K has been shown to have a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It has been sequenced from Bacillus sphaericus and was found to have a homologous amino acid sequence with other herbicidins, such as herbicidin P1. The biosynthesis gene for herbicidin K is found on the chromosome in Bacillus sphaericus, which is not present in any other strain of bacteria. The biosynthesis pathway for this molecule starts with the production of L-amino acids by microbial cells through the process of hydrolysis.
