(2S,4R)-Methyl 4-hydroxypiperidine-2-carboxylate hydrochloride is a macrocyclization inhibitor that prevents the formation of macrocyclic compounds from simple building blocks. It is used in research to study the hepatitis C virus and HIV. The impurity profile of this compound is similar to that of (2S,4S)-methyl 4-hydroxypiperidine-2-carboxylate hydrochloride and includes ruthenium metal. This compound was isolated by a process that involved chromatography on silica and elution with chloroform/methanol. The isolation process resulted in high yields and outperformed a previous method of preparation.
