Isoniazid is an antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity against bacteria and protozoa. It prevents the synthesis of mycolic acid, which is required for cell wall formation. Isoniazid has been shown to inhibit the growth of HIV in vitro and has been used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The drug has also been shown to have an antifungal effect in vitro. Isoniazid inhibits the growth of Group P2 bacteria, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex, by binding to specific enzymes that are involved in mycolic acid synthesis. Isoniazid is not active against yeast or fungi, although it can be used in combination with other drugs that are effective against these organisms. Isoniazid binds to picolinic acid, which results in its structural analysis through sodium citrate.
