Leucomycin A3 is a peptide antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the il-2 receptor on polymorphonuclear leucocytes. The drug has been shown to be effective in treating infectious diseases such as bacterial meningitis and pneumonia caused by Gram-positive bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. Leucomycin A3 was also shown to bind to the tetracycline resistance gene, preventing transcription of the gene and thus inhibiting protein synthesis. This antibiotic has a matrix effect that may be due to its ability to bind to DNA molecules and form crosslinks with proteins. Leucomycin A3 can be used in wastewater treatment because it binds strongly with organic matter, which causes it to precipitate out of solution.
