Monensin is a quillaja saponaria extract that has been shown to have antimicrobial properties. Monensin inhibits the growth of bacteria by disrupting the synthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides, which are essential for cell replication. It also inhibits the production of iron-sulfur clusters in mitochondria and disrupts the matrix effect in bacterial cell walls. Monensin sodium has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases caused by gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Monensin sodium also has an effect on bowel disease due to its ability to increase colonic transit time and reduce constipation. There is some evidence that monensin may have a beneficial effect on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification.
