Mezlocillin sodium is a semisynthetic penicillin antibiotic that is active against gram-positive bacteria. It binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition, which prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Mezlocillin sodium has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases such as sepsis and pneumonia. The analytical method used to measure mezlocillin sodium concentrations in blood plasma is called chemiluminescence. This test uses a reaction solution containing glucose, which is injected into a patient. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) can then be used to determine the concentration of mezlocillin sodium in blood plasma from the light emission of glucose.
