Myriocin is a natural product that has been shown to inhibit the enzyme activity of ATP synthase in the mitochondrial membrane. It also inhibits the activity of lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase, which are enzymes involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxanes. Myriocin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in animal models, as well as anticancer effects. It has also been shown to have a protective effect on atherosclerotic lesions, by inhibiting the formation of lipid deposits on blood vessel walls. Myriocin has been found to have anti-infectious properties against infectious diseases such as influenza virus, HIV, and tuberculosis. The molecule is synthesized from a wild type strain of Streptomyces hygroscopicus and can be produced synthetically.
