FABP4 is a fatty acid binding protein that has been shown to be over-expressed in cancer tissues. The FABP4 inhibitor, BMS309403, has been shown to inhibit the enzyme activity of FABP4, leading to the accumulation of fatty acids in tumor cells. This leads to cellular death by triggering apoptosis and necrosis. In addition, FABP4 inhibitors have anti-atherosclerotic effects and are being studied for their potential use as anti-obesity agents. These drugs may also have beneficial effects on mitochondrial function and neuronal function.
