Nonactin is a natural compound that has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against internodal cells in experimental models. It has also been found to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, including those that cause infectious diseases. Nonactin is a member of the class of compounds known as pentacyclic triterpenes and is structurally related to ursolic acid. Nonactin has been shown to be present at physiological levels in human serum and may serve as a potential biomarker for human health. It also inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential and leads to cell death by apoptosis. Nonactin binds to the mitochondrial membrane and inhibits ATP production, leading to cell death by apoptosis.
