Netilmicin sulfate is a semisynthetic antibiotic that belongs to the group of polymyxins. It is used for the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections, such as sepsis and pneumonia. Netilmicin sulfate inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the ribosomal 30S subunit and blocking protein synthesis. The netilmicin-resistant mutants were found to have mutations in their 16S rRNA gene, which lead to changes in the shape of the RNA molecule and low affinity for netilmicin. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are able to bind to these altered RNA molecules and prevent them from being exported from the cell, causing cell death.
Netilmicin sulfate has been shown to be effective against tetracycline resistant bacteria (e.g., E. coli) but not against isepamicin resistant bacteria (e.g., P. aeruginosa).
