Oligomycin is a polypeptide antibiotic that inhibits the mitochondrial respiratory chain. It binds to the 16S rRNA of the 30S subunit of the ribosome and prevents peptide elongation, leading to bacterial cell death. Oligomycin has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial function by binding to α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in rat brain mitochondria and inhibiting adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, thereby preventing ATP-driven transmembrane ion transport. Oligomycin also inhibits polymerase chain reactions at concentrations below its optimum concentration.
