Oleandomycin phosphate is a natural compound that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter proteins. It has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against a number of infectious bacteria, including erythromycin-resistant strains. The binding of oleandomycin to the ABC transporter protein prevents the uptake and recycling of ATP, which is necessary for bacterial growth. Oleandomycin phosphate is less potent than oleandomycin, but has a longer half-life and greater bioavailability due to its phosphorylation. This drug also has inhibitory properties against methyltransferase enzymes, which are important in the synthesis of folate derivatives in bacteria.
