Description

Oxacillin sodium monohydrate is an antibiotic agent used to treat infectious diseases. It is also used in the manufacture of other antibiotics, such as cephalosporin C and cephalothin. Oxacillin sodium monohydrate binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition, preventing the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Oxacillin sodium monohydrate also has a strong antibacterial efficacy against staphylococcus, but not against gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli.
