Penicillin G potassium is an antibiotic that belongs to the penicillin family of beta-lactam antibiotics. It is used as a first-line drug for the treatment of serious infections caused by bacteria, including some strains which are resistant to other antibiotics. Penicillin G potassium blocks bacterial cell wall synthesis by inhibiting the cross-linking of peptidoglycan, an essential component in bacterial cell walls. Penicillin G potassium binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the surface of bacteria and inhibits transpeptidation reactions in bacterial cell walls. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with PBPs, preventing transpeptidation reactions and synthesis of peptidoglycan, leading to cell death.
