Description

Penicillin G sodium is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of antibiotics called penicillins. It inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, which are made from a substance called peptidoglycan. Penicillin G sodium is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, such as bowel disease and pneumonia. Penicillin G sodium binds to the enzyme D-alanyl-D-alanine carboxypeptidase in the bacterial cell wall and prevents it from carrying out its function. This stops production of peptidoglycan, which is necessary for cell wall biosynthesis and causes bacterial death.
