- Ostreogrycin
Pristinamycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections. It binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, which prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis. Pristinamycin has been shown to have a matrix effect on human polymorphonuclear leukocytes, which may be due to its ability to bind DNA. Pristinamycin can also bind to DNA and inhibit transcription and replication. This drug has been shown to be active against gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, but not against gram-negative bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae or Escherichia coli. Pristinamycin also has a toxic effect on the skin, which may be due in part to its ability to induce apoptosis in epidermal cells
