Description

Pefloxacin mesylate is an antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of fluoroquinolones. It is used for the treatment of bacterial infections, such as skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections, ear infections, and urinary tract infections. Pefloxacin mesylate is more toxic than other fluoroquinolones in animal studies. The lethal concentration (LC)50 values for pefloxacin mesylate were 2.0 mg/kg in mice and 0.8 mg/kg in rats. The LC50 values for other fluoroquinolones were much higher: 25-100 mg/kg in mice and 8-64 mg/kg in rats. The optimum concentration for pefloxacin mesylate was determined to be 1 microgram per milliliter with a reaction solution of phosphate buffer pH 7.4 at 37 degrees Celsius over a period of 3 hours.
