Rifaximin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has been shown to reduce the symptoms of various diseases, including those involving the intestinal tract. It works by blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are inflammatory mediators. Rifaximin is used for the treatment of infectious diarrhea caused by certain bacteria and other bowel diseases. The drug inhibits bacterial growth in vitro by binding to bacterial ribosomes and preventing protein synthesis. Rifaximin has been shown to significantly up-regulate TLR expression in mice with colitis, thereby reducing inflammation. This drug also reduces symptoms of bowel disease in humans and animal models. Rifaximin shows no significant interactions with other drugs, such as dextran sulfate and polymerase chain reaction reagents. A model system has been developed to study the effects of rifaximin on gut microbiota transplantation in rats with colitis.
