Description:

Sulfadoxine inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing protein synthesis. Sulfadoxine is used in combination with pyrimethamine for the treatment of toxoplasmosis and malaria. The matrix effect is a phenomenon that occurs when the concentration of an agent (e.g., sulfadoxine) decreases in vitro as the concentration of another agent (e.g., pyrimethamine) increases. This synergistic effect can be exploited to measure sulfadoxine concentrations in samples with low concentrations of sulfadoxine and high concentrations of pyrimethamine. A potential biomarker for sulfadoxine is its ability to bind to proteins in maternal blood. Sulfadoxine has been shown to have a toxic epidermal effect, causing skin reactions on guinea pigs and mice after topical application or intravenous injection. Sulfadoxine also has been shown to have a synergistic effect
