Seco-erythromycin is a semisynthetic antibiotic that belongs to the group of macrolides. It is used in life science research and as a medicine for infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Seco-erythromycin has been shown to have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, and antimicrobial activity against microorganisms. It was originally isolated from Streptomyces erythreus. The compound was synthesized in 1955 by Dr. Paul Janssen in his laboratory at Janssen Pharmaceutica NV (now Johnson & Johnson).
