Sulopenem is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, its active forms. It inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing protein synthesis. Sulopenem is used in oral treatment of infectious diseases caused by gram-positive organisms. Sulopenem has shown activity against penicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. Sulopenem also has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
