Sulopenem etzadroxil is a prodrug that is converted to sulopenem, its active form, by esterases in the gastrointestinal tract. It has been shown to be effective against a broad spectrum of bacterial strains, and is currently undergoing clinical development for use in the treatment of infectious diseases. Sulopenem etzadroxil is an orally administered antibacterial drug with a linker that allows it to be taken without food or water. Oral administration of sulopenem etzadroxil leads to high serum levels of the drug and allows for an extended duration of action. This antibiotic has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties that are similar to those of other antibiotics such as cefotaxime and ceftriaxone. Sulopenem etzadroxil has been shown to have antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria, and mycobacteria at clinically relevant doses.
