Description

Sisomicin is an antibiotic that inhibits the production of bacterial cell walls by binding to the peptidoglycan precursor D-alanyl-D-alanine. It has a matrix effect on human pathogens, which may be due to its ability to inhibit synthesis of the human tissue proteoglycans. Sisomicin binds to the human monoclonal antibody 3F2 and prevents it from recognizing bacterial cells. The antibiotic has been shown to be active against a number of wild-type strains in vitro and in vivo and has been used for the treatment of tissue infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria. The drug may also have chemotherapeutic effects, as it has been shown to inhibit growth of tumor cells in mice. This antibiotic is typically combined with other antibiotics or chemotherapeutic agents.
