Sulfadiazine is a sulfonamide antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by binding to the enzyme β-lactamase. It has been shown to be effective against bowel disease, although it is not active against non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. Sulfadiazine binds to the enzyme β-lactamase and prevents it from breaking down penicillin and other β-lactam antibiotics. This prevents bacteria from producing cell walls, which leads to cell death. The sulfonamides are used in combination with other antibiotics because they inhibit bacterial growth by interfering with the synthesis of their cell walls, but do not interfere with human cell wall synthesis.
Sulfadiazine can also be used as a gold standard for analytical methods involving colloidal gold techniques. The rate constant for this reaction was determined at pH 7.5 to be 1.2 x 10^2 M/sec, indicating a high reactivity of sulfadiaz
