Tyrothricin is a mixture of cyclic peptides and benzalkonium chloride. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and fungi. Tyrothricin inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the cell membrane, preventing the synthesis of lipids required for bacterial growth. Tyrothricin also inhibits the energy metabolism in bacteria, leading to an accumulation of intracellular ATP. This drug is often used as an additive in wastewater treatment systems, where it has been shown to be effective against infectious agents such as E. coli and Enterobacter aerogenes. Tyrothricin can also be used topically as a pharmacological agent for the treatment of inflammatory lesions (e.g., burns).
