Viramidine is an oral prodrug that is converted to the active compound, viramidine monophosphate, in the body. This drug has been shown to have antiviral activity against a number of viruses, including HIV and hepatitis C. Viramidine inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators such as interleukins and tumor necrosis factor-alpha by inhibiting toll-like receptor signaling pathways. It also has inhibitory properties against a variety of pharmacological agents, including coumarin derivatives and ribavirin. Viramidine also has a number of other biological properties including affecting energy metabolism, enzyme activities, and polymerase chain reactions.
