Viramidine hydrochloride is a prodrug that is converted to the active form, viramidine, in vivo. Viramidine inhibits protein synthesis by targeting the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase, which is essential for the conversion of ribonucleotides to deoxyribonucleotides. Viramidine has shown inhibitory properties against solid tumours in vitro and has been shown to be effective in treating erythropoietic protoporphyria, an autosomal recessive skin disease characterized by photosensitivity and blistering of the skin. Viramidine also inhibits Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathways and polymerase chain reactions (PCRs), which have been implicated in a number of infectious diseases. Viramidine can be administered orally as a prodrug or intravenously.
