Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that binds to peptidoglycan in the cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria. It inhibits the synthesis of proteins by preventing the cross-linking of amino acids in the peptidoglycan layer, which is necessary for cell wall growth and division. Vancomycin aglycon has been shown to be effective against resistant mutants and teicoplanin-resistant strains, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Vancomycin aglycon may also be used as an additive in penicillin preparations.
