It has been shown to be effective against protozoan parasites and has a good activity against Gram-positive bacteria. The main metabolic pathway for 2-(2-Methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)acetic acid is hydrolysis by hydrochloric acid, with a minor route involving hydroxy metabolite formation. This drug also acts as a prodrug for antipyrine, which inhibits bacterial growth via inhibition of protein synthesis.
