4,4²-DDMU is a bacteriostatic agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It is used as a disinfectant and preservative in various settings such as workstations, laboratories, and hospitals. 4,4²-DDMU has been shown to inhibit the production of water vapor from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Aerobacter aerogenes in vitro assays. At physiological levels, 4,4²-DDMU inhibits the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Furthermore, it has been shown to have inhibitory properties against both infectious diseases and optical sensors.
