The Pebulate assay is a quantitative and sensitive method for measuring the level of VLCFAs in biological samples. This method relies on chemical ionization, which produces ions from the sample that are analyzed by mass spectrometry. The Pebulate assay is based on a sandwich immunoassay format, with a monoclonal antibody (Mab) targeted to the VLCFA antigen as the capture antibody and an enzyme-linked polyclonal antibody (pAb) conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as the detection antibody. The pAb recognizes both VLCFAs and epidermal growth factor (EGF), which is a growth factor commonly found in cancerous cells. Logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between fatty acids and cancer. The results showed that there was a significant correlation between fatty acid levels and cancer risk, with higher levels of fatty acids being associated with increased risk for developing cancer.
