Butyltin trichloride is a reactive chemical that can form covalent bonds with organic molecules. It reacts with hydrochloric acid and dibutyltin oxide to form butyltrichlorosilane, which is then reacted with trifluoroacetic acid to form methylglycosides. The reaction mechanism of butyltin trichloride is complex, involving nucleophilic attack on the chloride ion and coordination geometry. This molecule has been extensively studied using laser ablation and plasma mass spectrometry (PMS). Butyltin trichloride has been shown to react with a number of other molecules such as benzene, nitrobenzene, and ethylbenzene. It adsorbs onto various surfaces including silica gel, quartz glass, gold surfaces, and carbon surfaces.
