It has been shown to be a serotonin uptake inhibitor and to activate serotonergic neurons. 5-Methoxy det has also been shown to have functional activity at both 5-HT2A and 5-HT1A receptors. The compound is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP2D6) and has pharmacokinetic properties similar to other drugs in this class.
