The reaction proceeds via an electrochemical method using boron nitride as the working electrode and acetate as the electrolyte. This reaction product has been shown to be stable in solution and can be used for diagnosis of diseases by MRI imaging. Bis(cyclopentadienyl)osmium has a redox potential of -0.2V, which is close to that of ferrocene (-0.4V). It has been shown to have anti-cancer properties in vitro, but more research needs to be done in vivo.
