Iron(II) sulfide (FeS) is a semiconductor material that has been used as a fluorescence probe in wastewater treatment. It has also been used as a model system to study the interactions of HIV with other organisms. FeS has been found to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to intracellular targets such as the enzyme haloacid dehalogenase, which converts sulfide into hydrogen sulfide; or to prevent the formation of disulfide bonds in proteins, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. The reaction mechanism is thought to be similar to that of anhydrous sodium and other metal sulfides, involving oxidation-reduction reactions that eventually produce elemental sulfur. Iron(II) sulfide is also an effective antimicrobial agent against many infectious diseases, due to its redox potential and thermal expansion properties.
