Pumice stone is a volcanic rock that has been used for centuries to clean and polish skin. The porous surface of the pumice stone absorbs fatty esters from skin cells, which are then hydrolyzed by hydrochloric acid. This process produces an oil-rich water that is rich in fatty acids, proteins, and other skin nutrients. The resulting water can be used to treat wastewater or as a source of organic matter for soil enrichment. Pumice stones have also been shown to be effective in removing viruses from surfaces, such as herpes simplex virus from surfaces.
