Catalpin is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that has been shown to have antitumour activity. It is also used as an anticancer drug, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of DNA and proteins in cancer cells. Catalpin also has genotoxic effects, which means it can cause mutations in DNA. The effectiveness of this compound against tumours depends on the type of tumour cell and the dose applied. Catalpin inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis in colon cancer cells by inducing protein degradation and inhibiting protein synthesis at low concentrations. Catalpin can also cause differentiation of prostate cancer cells, but does not induce apoptosis or differentiation in pancreatic cancer cells.
