Ammonium glycyrrhizinate is a drug that has been used for the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis. Ammonium glycyrrhizinate, a quaternary ammonium salt, reacts with sodium citrate to form ionotropic gels. It has been shown in clinical studies that this drug can be used to treat patients with chronic viral hepatitis and also prevent the development of cirrhosis in people who are at risk. Ammonium glycyrrhizinate has also been shown to have hemolytic activity and can be used as an adjuvant therapy for acute viral hepatitis. It is not effective against other types of liver diseases such as alcoholic liver disease or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Ammonium glycyrrhizinate is a skin-whitening agent and is effective against inflammatory skin diseases such as acne or psoriasis.
