Description:

1-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)urea is a novel neuroprotective agent that was synthesized for the first time in our laboratory. The amino acid residues of valine were replaced with phenylalanine residues to create a mutant that has an affinity for the active site of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). 1-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)urea has been shown to be a stable, non-toxic and selective inhibitor of nNOS. This drug also interacts with l-arginine by binding to its binding site and stabilizing the l-arginine molecule. 1-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)urea inhibits tumor growth in vitro and in vivo, and may be useful for treating cancer.
