Cyclohexanone 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone is a test compound that can be used to determine the presence of benzene in a mixture. It has been shown to be stable under acidic conditions and can be readily prepared from cyclohexanone. This compound has been found to react with benzene in two different ways:
1) by forming a phenylhydrazine derivative which is then oxidized to form an orange color, or
2) by forming a dinitrophenylhydrazone derivative which is then reduced to form a brown color.
The presence of benzene in the mixture can be determined by observing the color change in either reaction vessel. The compounds are chromatographed on silica gel and the various compounds separated into individual bands.
