Atraton is a cationic surfactant that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria. It is a picolinic acid derivative that can be used as an analytical method for herbicides, such as atrazine and glyphosate. Atraton binds to the surface of bacterial cells by forming a monolayer and disrupting the cell membrane. This prevents the cell from taking up nutrients or secreting waste products. Atraton also inhibits fatty acid synthesis in rat liver microsomes, which may be due to its ability to bind to glucocorticoid receptors and form disulfide bonds.
