Prometon is a synthetic glucocorticoid that binds to the glucocorticoid receptor and mimics the effects of cortisol. It is used for treating psychotic disorders, obesity, and other chronic diseases. Prometon is an agonist of the glucocorticoid receptor. It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis by blocking mRNA transcription in test samples of rat liver cells incubated with prometon. This drug also has long-term toxicity effects on rats exposed to high doses over a period of time, which may be due to its ability to affect body mass index. Prometon has been shown to have toxic effects on the kidneys in animal studies, which may be due to its ability to bind with cellular proteins, such as albumin and transferrin.
