The herbicide is absorbed through the leaves and roots, and then transported to the plant's meristems (the point where new cells are formed). Bromoxynil-octanoate is an ester of bromoxynil and octanoic acid. This chemical has shown to be toxic to bacteria in tissue culture, with a matrix effect on toxicity. Bromoxynil-octanoate has been used as an analytical method for p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which can be found in fatty acids. Acute toxicities have been found to be high in rats, mice, rabbits and guinea pigs after oral administration.
