Pentachlorothioanisole is a chlorinated aromatic compound that has been used as an insecticide and fungicide. Pentachlorothioanisole has been detected in maternal blood samples of CD-1 mice at levels that are below the threshold for acute toxicities. The metabolism of pentachlorothioanisole has been investigated in mouse liver preparations following exposure to pentachlorothioanisole, phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5), or methyl transferase (MT). This chemical is metabolized by MT to 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-4-(methylthio)pyrimidine (TMP), which can inhibit the rate of epidermal growth factor (EGF) synthesis. TMP also inhibits protein synthesis and cell division in cultured rat embryo cells. It is not known whether these findings are specific to rats or if they also apply to other species such as humans.
