It is an oxidation product of dimethyl and has been found to be useful in the Diels-Alder reaction, fragmentation, and as a catalyst for cycloaddition reactions. Dimethyl 7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hepta-2,5-diene-2,3-dicarboxylate can also be used as a precursor to form five-, six-, and seven membered rings with heterocycles such as phenols or aromatic heterocycles such as pyridine.
