Nitrofen is a broad-spectrum herbicide that inhibits the growth of plants by inhibiting mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. It is used to control weeds and invasive plants in agricultural settings, as well as in the control of aquatic vegetation in ponds, lakes, and streams. Nitrofen has been shown to be teratogenic in rats when administered during pregnancy. In addition, nitrofen exposure can result in oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, which may be associated with respiratory disease development.
