Chlorthal-dimethyl is a herbicide that is used in the laboratory to ablate cells. Chlorthal-dimethyl has been shown to be effective against pandemic influenza, and has been used in clinical trials for the treatment of hepatic steatosis. The mechanism of action is not well understood, but it has been shown to inhibit the production of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9). Chlorthal-dimethyl may be carcinogenic, as it causes liver tumors in rats. This drug also causes an increase in body mass index and dimethyl fumarate, which may be due to its ability to cause hydrogen bonding interactions with DNA and proteins.
