3-Hydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)-4H-pyran-4-one is a manganate compound that is used in the synthesis of carboxylic acid derivatives. The reaction is performed in a solvent mixture of methanol, acetone and triethylamine (1:1:1 v/v). The reaction proceeds through an intermediate formation of a tetrahedral ether, which is then hydrolyzed to yield the desired product. This process can be carried out in batch or continuous mode.
