Sulfamethazine sodium salt is a sulfonamide that inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting their enzyme activities. It binds to bacterial DNA and prevents its transcription, thereby preventing replication. This drug is used in veterinary medicine to treat bowel disease and as an antimicrobial agent for disinfecting surfaces. Sulfamethazine sodium salt has been shown to be toxic to humans, with side effects including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Sulfamethazine sodium salt also has high resistance to most antibiotics, which may be due to its ability to bind to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase.
