Sulfasymazine is an analog of sulfanilamide and a cross-linking agent. It is used as a drug to treat inflammatory bowel disease by inhibiting the inflammatory response in the intestines, which leads to decreased mucosal damage. Sulfasymazine has been shown to be effective in treating Crohn's disease with no side effects. This drug can form conjugates with certain biomolecules, such as glycopeptides and proteins, which are then excreted from the body through the kidneys or liver. Sulfasymazine may also be excreted in breast milk. The biological properties of sulfasymazine are that it acts as a δ opioid receptor agonist and inhibits adenyl cyclase activity. The chemical structure of sulfasymazine includes a hydroxyl group, which is necessary for its anti-inflammatory effect.
